Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun conducted a virtual meeting on Tuesday with key figures from the Take It Back Movement, including notable lawyers Femi Falana (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN).
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Tuesday detailing the meeting. The discussion centered around the group’s upcoming nationwide protest, focusing on ensuring the safety of citizens while respecting their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
Egbetokun highlighted the necessity of maintaining public order and safety during the protests. He affirmed the group’s right to peaceful demonstration and emphasized the Police Force’s duty to support these rights within the confines of the law.
To facilitate this, the IGP advised the Take It Back Movement to work closely with State Police Commissioners to organize and plan the protests. This coordination aims to ensure the safety of participants and the public, address any potential security issues, and guarantee that the protests remain peaceful.
The Inspector-General of Police advised against impromptu open processions due to potential security risks.
The statement elaborated, “He emphasized the importance of organizing and coordinating with the Police and other security agencies as critical measures to mitigate risks, protect citizens’ rights, and ensure the safety of all involved.
“The Inspector-General of Police reiterated the Force’s commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens and ensuring that public gatherings are conducted safely and securely. He called on stakeholders to collaborate in fostering a peaceful and secure environment during the planned protests.”
